What Are Zygomatic Implants? Everything You Need to Know

What are zygomatic implants? If you have been looking for dental implants recently, you may have heard about this specific type of implant.

It is relatively new in the dental implants world and is getting very popular. But what’s the difference with traditional dental implants? Keep reading to find out and if they work for you.

1. Replace Upper Teeth

The main purpose of zygomatic implants is to replace teeth in the upper jaw. They are a good option if you need to replace:

  • An entire arch of missing teeth.
  • Severely damaged teeth.
  • Teeth that have become loose due to periodontal disease.

Plus, zygomatic implants are an excellent choice for patients who are not candidates for conventional dental implants due to a lack of bone mass. Patients can also use zygomatic implants in coordination with traditional dental implants to replace both the upper and lower teeth.

2. Attached to the Cheekbone

Zygomatic implants are placed into the zygomatic bone, also known as the cheekbone. This is the main reason they are notably longer than traditional dental implants. Unlike the maxillar bone, the zygomatic bone is much denser and provides a solid base for the implant.

3. Can Be Used with Insufficient Bone Mass

As you probably know already, one main requirement for dental implants is good bone mass for the implant to fuse. Nevertheless, zygomatic implants can be placed even in cases where the patient lacks bone mass since the dentist does not need to anchor them into the maxillary bone. Unlike jawbones, zygomatic bones do not lose bone mass due to missing teeth or periodontal disease.

4. No Need for Supplemental Procedures

Often, when dental implants are set in the upper jaw with low bone mass, additional procedures may be necessary. One common procedure is a sinus lift, where the bone between the oral cavity and the sinus cavity is reduced to prevent the implant from harming the sinuses.

Usually, the patient would need to wait until the sinus lift has healed before placing the implants.

However, with zygomatic implants, there is no need for other procedures, so you can get your implants as soon as possible.
